The Five People You Will Meet in Heaven

by Mitch Albom

(Book review)

Have you ever wonder why are you doing whatever it is that you are doing right now? Have you ever asked yourself why you are at the place where you are right now? Ever wonder what is your purpose in life? Ever wonder if things that happen around you are really random? Ever wonder what’s next after death? Surely you did asked yourself at least one of these questions. In the book The Five People You will meet in Heaven all these questions will be answered.

This wonderful work of fiction by Mitch Albom revolves around the past life and after life of a man named Eddie. Eddie is a very old man over the age of 80. He was a war veteran, a widower, childless and a battered kid when he was young, and he at the moment, is a maintenance man in an amusement park called Ruby Pier. He is ragged and weak and most of all bitter about most of the part of his life. He is old yet he doesn’t see what his purpose is at all. He doesn’t think that his life is ever significant. He hated his life until his final hour came.

The novel begins in a very peculiar scene, at the death of the novel’s protagonist Eddie. Ironic as it may seem, Eddie died at the beginning chapter of the book. Even more ironic is that he was killed by an accident caused by a ride failure.

The truth about his past was unfolded in front of him as he traveled through the past after his death. During his trip he met five people who had been part of his life, some he know some he doesn’t. Each of the people shared him a lesson. Through these five people all of his questions were answered. Mysteries about the past were solved and the thing that was kept secret from him was finally opened.

This piece of literature is greatly moving. Mitch Albom is a very good writer. The combination of flashbacks and the present made the story even more interesting. The descriptions are very vivid. The words are very easy to read and understand. The lines are very short and brief yet with great impact to the readers.

This book has plenty of memorable lines that will surely inspire any reader. After you read this book you will value life like never before. You will realize how important you are. You will realize how important what you are doing right now. You will realize that the world is full of stories, but all stories are one.

Note:    There is also a movie version of this book with the same title. The movie is also very good and was also written by Mitch Albom for screen play.
